Governor Polis Flies Foreign Flags at the Capitol While Coloradans Struggle

On April 23, Governor Jared Polis raised the Mexican flag over the Colorado State Capitol. Just weeks earlier, on March 15, he raised the Canadian flag in the same place. These weren’t spontaneous gestures - they were the centerpieces of official proclamations declaring “Colorado-Mexico Friendship Day” and “Colorado-Canada Friendship Day.”

But while the governor parades foreign flags above the people’s Capitol, Coloradans are drowning under rising costs, tax burdens, and constitutional infringements. Instead of focusing on the crises at home, Governor Polis is playing diplomat, using the Capitol - not as a symbol of the people’s sovereignty - but as a billboard for his personal political aspirations.

Let’s call it what it is: a campaign stunt. While everyday Coloradans are worried about affording groceries, paying their property taxes, or holding onto their Second Amendment rights, the governor is busy setting the stage for his next political act - flirting with federal-level ambitions on the backs of struggling families.

This isn’t just poor optics. It’s a slap in the face to every Coloradan who expects their governor to prioritize their needs. The Capitol is not a platform for global posturing. It is the people’s house, where their voices, their struggles, and their futures are supposed to take precedence.

Flying a foreign flag at the Capitol isn’t a friendly gesture when the people of Colorado are watching their governor ignore their most pressing concerns. It’s a signal that their voices come second to political theater. It’s a reminder that Governor Polis would rather play international statesman than address the issues affecting the working families who elected him.

While the legislature is locked in battle over the constitutional rights of Coloradans - fighting to defend the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR), protect the Second Amendment, and preserve parental rights - Governor Polis is focused on building his resume for higher office.

This is not leadership. This is vanity politics.

Coloradans deserve a governor who’s committed to their struggles, not one who raises the flags of foreign nations while ignoring the flagging spirits of his own people. The Capitol is not an international stage. It belongs to the people of Colorado. And no foreign flag - no matter how politically convenient - should ever fly higher than the voices of Coloradans.
