Addressing Illegal Migration in Douglas County

Illegal migration is not a theoretical issue in Douglas County; it is a pressing reality that demands immediate attention and decisive action. As your state representative for House District 45 and a councilman for Castle Rock, I can confidently say that the policies currently in place have failed to protect our communities and uphold the rule of law.

The Biden administration’s failure to secure the southern border has left Colorado to deal with the consequences of poor immigration policies. Denver’s decision to welcome illegal migrants from Texas, compounded by its request for $90 million to fund an asylum seekers program, has brought approximately 43,000 illegal migrants into the state. This influx has turned what should have been a municipal decision into a statewide challenge, spreading across the Front Range and impacting every corner of Colorado.

The inability of local law enforcement to coordinate directly with immigration officials due to state legislation further exacerbates the problem. This restriction has effectively tied the hands of our law enforcement officers, preventing them from doing their jobs effectively. In Douglas County and Castle Rock, we firmly believe that law enforcement must have the tools and autonomy to protect our communities. We will always support our police officers and their ability to uphold the law without unnecessary interference.

During interviews, local citizens shared a range of perspectives on the issue. One resident emphasized the need to control who enters the country and ensure the process is legal. Another expressed concerns about mass deportations creating havoc but acknowledged the necessity of removing individuals who are here illegally with malicious intent. These voices reflect a shared sentiment: Coloradans value safety, security, and the rule of law.

I echo these concerns and stand firm in my commitment to work with like-minded officials and the incoming Trump administration to address illegal migration. Castle Rock and Douglas County will not hinder federal efforts to remove illegal migrants who pose a threat to our communities. This is not about rhetoric; it is about taking action to protect American homeowners, families, and communities from those who would do harm.

Denver’s decisions do not represent the entirety of Colorado, and they certainly do not reflect the values of Douglas County. We must unite as a state to secure our borders, empower law enforcement, and enact policies that prioritize the safety and well-being of Coloradans. As your representative, I remain steadfast in my mission to uphold these principles and ensure our communities are protected.

Sheriff Darren Weekly of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office has posted Detention Demographic Statistics on their website that is updated hourly.  At the date/time of this article (January 18, 2025, at 9:30 AM MST), there are 352 inmates of which 54 are non-US citizens - that's 15.34% of our county jail's total population.
