Colorado’s Public Safety Crisis: How Killing SB25-047 Further Endangers Our Communities

The defeat of SB25-047 in committee is a profound setback for the safety and security of Colorado's citizens. This bill aimed to reverse policies that inhibit local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities, thereby addressing a growing public safety crisis.

By voting against this bill brought by Senator Mark Baisley and me, Democrats have effectively tied the hands of law enforcement, making it more difficult to apprehend and deport individuals who pose legitimate threats to our communities.

SB25-047 would have reinstated provisions requiring local governments to report individuals suspected of being illegally present to federal authorities, a practice that was repealed in 2013. This repeal has coincided with a significant rise in crime, including violent offenses, committed by individuals who should not have been in the country in the first place.

The bill also sought to end prohibitions on local governments contracting with private entities for immigration detention services - an essential measure to prevent overcrowding and ensure that dangerous individuals are detained rather than released back into our communities.

While opponents argued that the bill would foster distrust between immigrant communities and law enforcement, the reality is that this concern fails to recognize that the primary purpose of SB25-047 was to target individuals who have already violated both state and federal laws - not law-abiding residents.

By refusing to support this legislation, those who voted against it have prioritized political optics over the safety of their constituents, exposing Colorado’s communities to increased risks of drug trafficking, human smuggling, and gang-related violence.

Furthermore, by prohibiting arrests in courthouses and preventing probation officers from sharing information with federal authorities, current laws have created safe havens for individuals who exploit our legal system's weaknesses. This not only endangers public safety but also demoralizes law enforcement officers who are sworn to protect our communities.

The refusal to pass SB25-047 represents a profound failure of leadership and a disregard for the will of citizens who expect their elected officials to prioritize safety over partisan agendas. Colorado deserves policies that empower law enforcement, uphold the rule of law, and protect communities from preventable criminal threats.

The defeat of this bill ensures that Colorado's public safety crisis will not only continue but likely worsen. 

It is imperative that we revisit and advance similar legislation in the future to correct this grave error and restore safety and security to our state.

House Bill 25-1133 - a bill that prohibits the sale of ammunition to anyone under the age of 21 - should have died in the Business Affairs & Labor Committee. The votes were there to stop it.
